Wherever there are great food cities, there are bound to be something else: wunderkind chefs. Girl and boy wonders create ten-dish tasting menus before they know how to drive. The internet finds them, the press praises them, and everyone pushes them to open that first restaurant. And some of them even do!
Sure they might have talent, taste, and some cocky enthusiasm, but that’s it. They need experience planning a menu, an instinctive crowd pleasing appetite, and the actual authority to run a kitchen, which young chefs only get when they work for someone. They need an older chef to put them through the fire and extinguish them when they’re actually done.
A millennial chef is about to get grilled.
On SEASONED CHEF , it’s a wunderkind kitchen education, one city at a time. In this one hour traveling culinary competition, acclaimed chef Hugh Acheson will guide young chefs across the country to take on local talent in underground cooking competitions. Together, they’ll take on the best, handle the worst, and train the novice for his own restaurant when it’s done.
Seasoned Chef starts without culinary kingpin, Hugh Acheson—current Top Chef judge , proud chef and partner of several distinguished restaurants, and award winning cookbook author . He’ll meet his protégé—a talented Young Chef with credits from a top culinary academy and internet heat behind his name. And off they go, traveling to different cities, each with its own challenge. Under the mentorship of Hugh, Young Chef can win the money he needs to open that first restaurant, while developing the skills they need to do it, but it’s a gamble.
Through betting, Hugh and Young Chef will build their food bank. Each episode of Seasoned Chef features a new town to engage in a high stakes, high money competition. They’ll take on some local legends in a one-on-one kitchen battle with the rules negotiated by Hugh, who will stake his own money on the Young Chef’s skills.
The Seasoned Chef duo will take on the best in every food form. From the nation’s top lunch lady to a breakfast master in Vegas. From the hottest Thai food in Los Angeles to the oldest bar food in New York. Whatever the location, it’s up to our senior chef to come up with a plausible victory for his protégé. Hugh Acheson has to make a bet his kid can win—no matter how unlikely. Hugh and Challenger will agree, set the bet, and then...its out of the frying pan and into the fire.
On Seasoned Chef, it’s a new high stakes competition each week, totally determined by the culture of each town. It’ll be immersive, intensive and delicious to watch. Throughout, our Hugh Acheson will advise and train his young talent, but ultimately,
it’s up to the Young Chef to make the call in the kitchen.
In the end of each episode, with some skill and creative wagering, the twosome may just take home the money. Or our chef won’t be able to handle the heat and get burned, only taking home a new experience to be a better chef. In our finale, if the kid makes it, Hugh will decide if they’ve learned enough to get the rest of the money to open their restaurant.
Can our acclaimed chef pass the torque? Can young culinary talent be whipped into shape? Whatever happens, one potentially amazing kitchen superstar is going to learn the right way. And that’s the hard way.
